# In the west of the city, pushes for small traffic changes are stymied by hazy timeline for  BusConnects works

So far, construction [has started on](https://ballymunfinglasscheme.ie/?ref=dublininquirer.com) two of the 12 core bus corridors planned as part of BusConnects and the redesign of Dublin's bus network.

These first two are the corridors running from Liffey Valley to the city centre, and from Ballymun/Finglas to the city centre. 

When, though, will the others come? asked Ray Cunningham, a Green Party councillor, at a meeting of Dublin City Council's South Central Area Committee on Wednesday.

All 12 core bus corridors have planning permission, although six have been held up by judicial reviews, Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien, of Fianna Fáil, has [said](https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/debates/question/2026-06-09/451/?ref=dublininquirer.com).

Specifically, Cunningham wanted a start date from the National Transport Authority (NTA), which is rolling out the network, on the Tallaght/Clondalkin to City Centre Bus Corridor. 

Because when these big projects are ahead, looming somewhere in the future, it means that smaller interventions needed to make streets safer are put on hold, he said.

Drawings for the Tallaght/Clondalkin to City Centre [scheme](https://tallaghtclondalkinscheme.ie/?ref=dublininquirer.com) were published in 2023, he said. "But there has been no information released about when work will actually start."

"Every section of the route since then has been frozen in amber," said Cunningham. 

Coming east, the two prongs of the route join up on Drimnagh Road, continue up Crumlin Road, through Dolphin's Barn, up Cork Street, and on up to Christ Church.

Cunningham asked the committee to write to the NTA to get a firm timeline for works, so that Dublin City Council can then decide, with that information, whether it should wait for that or put in measures anyway along this route.

## Holding it up

There's a busy junction near St Mary's Church and Bunting Road which really needs a pedestrian crossing for people to get to Crumlin Village, said Cunningham. 

BusConnects plans include one. So, he has been told by the council that works are frozen until that is built out, he says.

It's the same story outside the Crumlin children's hospital, at the top of Cooley Road, he said. It's a busy junction and he knows of a blind woman who tries to cross every day to the bus stop but there's no time when the traffic is stopped, he said.

"If you ask, you'll be told this is part of the BusConnects project, we can't touch it until then," he said.

But it's unclear when this BusConnects route will happen, said Cunningham. If it's next year, that's fine, but not if its 2032 or 2035, he said. "We can't go on for another 10 years like this."

Last October, councillors in South Dublin County Council [were told that](https://meetings.southdublin.ie/Home/ViewReply/87243?ref=dublininquirer.com) construction works on the Tallaght/Clondalkin to City Centre were expected to start by the end of this year. There's no sign of that yet though.

Other corridors are moving along. The NTA [recently launched its tender](https://www.linkedin.com/posts/national-transport-authority%5F2%5Fnational-transport-authority-issues-tender-activity-7500454912393252864-bSr1/?ref=dublininquirer.com) for a contractor for the Clongriffin to City Centre bus corridor.

On Wednesday, the South Central Area Committee agreed Cunningham's motion about a concrete timeline for the Tallaght/Clondalkin route. 

They would contact the NTA and get a response, said the chair, Sinn Féin Councillor Daithí Doolan.
