In Ballymun, locals rally to save Axis café, but the figures look grim
With large losses last year, the Axis centre’s reserves will be gone by the middle of next year, says its voluntary chair Declan Dunne – unless something changes.
Changes to funding under the tenant-in-situ scheme mean the council can no longer recoup costs of any immediate refurbishment of the properties.
The Department of Housing has made available €6m to support second-hand home acquisitions, including under the tenant-in-situ scheme.
“I just cannot get over that they didn’t maintain the same level of funding at a minimum, because it’s a bloody great scheme,” says Fine Gael Councillor Tom O’Leary, of the homelessness-prevention scheme.
